Data Backup

The amount of data building up on our computers is increasing dramatically. Gigabytes of movies, music and valuable photos and thousands of e-mails you don't have the time to sort through and delete.

Users on our networks dump the contents of their hard drives on the server, causing real headaches for IT staff.

Then, your hard-drive crashes, and you lose everything. Suddenly you realise what you have lost, and wish you had a backup of your data.

If you want to store small amounts of data, Writable CDs are fine and cheap, but if you have a large collection then you will need more space.

DVDs can store up to eight times more than a CD, and a dual Layer DVD will hold around 8 GB.

HD formats like HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs can store up to 50 GB. And of course it goes without saying, you will have to buy a Blu-ray or HD DVD writer to be able to write data on these discs.

These HD disc writers are still not common and are very expensive, so if you have large amounts of data, it would be wise to invest in an external hard-drive. External drives are rapidly coming down in price and growing in size. Many external drives come with software allowing you to set-up automatic back-ups at times and days of your choosing.

For a lighter, more robust, shock resistant option, go for a flash drive. More expensive per gigabyte, but also more accident-proof.

Many companies offer online data storage for a monthly fee, which is handy if you travel a lot and need access to your data from anywhere in the world. Uploading is however slow, and there are better solutions available. Bare in mind, that if your membership lapses, you could lose your data.

How best to backup your data, and what equipment and software to use is a problem for the inexperienced.
